Can we all agree to do the Euromillions tomorrow, and when one of us wins, we promise to give €30m to buying out the dogs from the Sportsground, and investing some into new stands? Thanks

I think I'd knock every stand and start from scratch if possible with a retractable roof

@ConnachtCows - Always looking for new followers :)

Not sure if anyone went to the game at Newcastle a couple of years ago but they used to have a similar set up to the Sportsgrounds (minus the dogs) and have gradually built decent stands to create a really good rugby venue.

More announcements this week www.chroniclelive.co.uk/business/busines...r-expansion-13711079 which include players training areas beneath the stands. This is something Saracens do in their main stand where the bar area converts into a running track during the week.

Not sure on what has been spent at Kingston Park over the years but I wouldn't have thought they have broke the bank with any of it.

Dreamer;
1. a person who dreams.
2. a person who lives in a world of fantasy; one who is impractical and unrealistic.
3. a person whose ideas or projects are considered audacious or highly speculative; visionary.

I would tend towards # 2 above :)

That green field site is the Atlantic at this moment in time. That new dock would have to be finished before any work could start on a stadium in the area. We can always dream I suppose.

I was actually wondering that, can the stadiums in the bid be changed, provided they are in the same city and meet the usual criteria, i really think we may have missed a major trick if that's the case. oh well, maybe 3023!!

Wasn't aware of that. Its a real shame. It would have been a great opportunity. You would have to think that Willie Ruane would have done his best to make that happen.

That Norwegian area looks fantastic
Yea very true, it can't exactly be plonked down anywhere. I seen however that one of the 3 options was a new ' green-field' site at the new docks. I'm not sure of the exact scale/size of that project or what exactly is planned, but maybe potentially there!! Its within walking distance of town etc, so perfect for all sporting events, concerts, city event location alike.

Could you imagine the atmosphere in a stadium like that, in out of the grubby wild winter weather, no wind no rain....good running rugby in dry conditions. It would attract more players to the club, and provide for greater away fans visiting, i also think that all goes for galway utd.

Personally i'm a big sports fan, I'd watch anything and never mind paying into a sports stadium/ground, but the one thing that can dictate whether i go or not is the weather, i cannot bear standing out in the driving wind and rain (trying to) watch a game that's turned to nothing more than a slug fest because of the weather , as I said, pipe dreams but the RWC should be a catalyst to consider and 'price' such a venture.

Good suggestions lads. I think the idea of an indoor stadium is a super one. Capacity of circa 20,000 , ground-sharing with Galway United. Finding the right location in the city (walking distance from Rabbitt's/O'Connell's is a pre-requisite!) is the big issue. I think if we find the right location, the funding can be raised.

I've looked through all the recent posts, there's one thing that i keep coming back to and it's been mentioned here more than once. I seen it a few years back on a newstalk page, it was the possibility of building an indoor/roofed stadium similar to that in dunedin (forsyth stadium) the article drew many similarities between both galway and dunedin in that both are coastal cities that are exposed to the elements which affected both the game itself ( wind rain etc meaning a tighter game of rugby and a little less exciting) and the spectators who didn't want to sit/stand out in such conditions.

Dunedin noticed that there was a need to bring the game indoors and the rugby world cup in NZ was their chance to push for such a stadium to be built. The stadium holds just shy of 31,000 for rugby/soccer with 36,000 for concerts. Obviously the same capacity wouldn't be needed for Galway but maybe circa 20,000 with further potential down the road (way way down). Even a stadium like Fargodome in Dakota, which holds 19,000 is unbelievable and the atmosphere is amazing, i was there a few years back. Perhaps share it with Galway Utd!

Maybe its real pie in the sky stuff, but why not try. Galway is growing..Fast, at some stage the population in the city itself will approach the 100,000 mark, with the population of surrounding towns in galway and neighbouring counties also growing, maybe now is the time to aim for the stars, and with the current WC bid (if successful) surely its a chance to seek additional funding to attempt get it across the line. Just my humble opinion.

Every time this thread is bumped I get excited.

Before crushing dissappointment.

A bit like supporting Connacht.

Apart from that one year.

I think it's fair to say that there isn't much love in these parts for the doggy set, with some citing mistreatment of the animals, but it seems some of the dogs are actually being very well looked after.....

EDP would be a disaster. I go there the odd time to watch United play but it is never an appealing trip! Always bloody cold..........and a pain to walk to and I am always asking myself when I get there why I bothered! No doubt we would get a great crowd there if we are top of the table but on the basis we need to budget for average md table seasons u will lose the casual fan.

Has to be City Centre!

Just saw in Linley's article in the Advertiser (it's the same one she did for the Times but with an extra paragraph about the stadium plans) that the whole idea of bolting an upper tier onto the existing Clan Terrace has been put to bed. Can't say I'm disappointed to see the back of that plan - 'twas a silly looking thing ...
