Interesting. That all sounds vaguely promising.

Great to hear 2 of the 3 sites being considered are the sportsground and the docks. Would be interesting to find out the third. Fingers crossed it’s not eamonn deacy park

Let's do a clan euromillions syndicate and when we win we will build a a super stadium. Armchairs for the syndicate members of course.
I read an article in the Connacht Tribune I think this week and they somebody from the Connacht branch was quoted as saying they are confident of gaining funding for the stadium but just still waiting on the site !

On the Worcester thread Pinky was joking about making a side trip to Paris to check out Racing's new stadium the U Arena.
Was trying to figure out the location on Google Maps and the aerial image when you scroll in shows the old landscape.

Remarkable how little footprint is actually required to build a 32,000 capacity stadium on, really like the fact that it's right next door to a Graveyard like a certain other ground we all know and love......

Ok it's about €300m over our total budget (U Arena cost €360m... ) , but does show that if we wanted to stay at the SG thinking outside the box design wise could make a great stadium possible. Or even if we need to move out to build, we don't need a huge land bank in place..

It's the human condition, I suppose; to want what we can't have. At this point i'm just hoping for something, anything, different at the current Sportsground site.

For the same reasons most of Grand Designs' audience live in urban shoeboxes...

Came across these two great stadiums in Switzerland.

Stade de la Maladière is an absolutely class 12,000 seat stadium in Neuchâtel, Switzerland (34,000 people but 80,000 if you count the metropolitan area) . Stadium was built in 2007 and the team went bankrupt in 2012 so maybe not the best fiscal example but it is a really cool looking stadium right by the water. Could envision this in Galway

This stadium is a really interesting idea on how to keep money ticking over even when not in use and help provide green energy. While it only holds 8,500 it is a pretty ingenious idea for a stadium in a small town (Schaffhausen is only 35,000).

Well, the possibility of using the 2023 RWC as a platform to build/develop a new ground was really buried. I was travelling in spain a few weeks ago and came across this tidy little stadium, the estadio nueva balastera palencia.
Very well laid out beautiful little 8500 seater stadium, enclosed from the elements for fans and players alike.
I think this is the type of thing Connacht need to strive toward, looks well externally also, would look nice down around the new docks area!!

I remember it was increased to 16.5k for 2015. I read it somewhere but can't find it now.

I think the minimum capacity for a world cup stadium is supposed to be 15,000 alright but it seems to be somewhat flexible.

Is a capacity of 10,000 too small for a stadium to host any future Rugby World Cup games!? I thought that you had to have a minimum capacity of 14,000 to qualify for these type of big events?

Couldn't agree more, it's needs to be multi purpose, soccer, concerts , big commercial events, even some exhibition gaa like the 7 aside hurling etc, Some international games for the junior ranks and the ladies who would fill a smaller stadium easily. It's badly needed in the west, the entire province would need to support it and every bit of gain or financial assistance or support should be examined amongst the 'Connacht diaspora ' near and far.
