I don't think McKeon will have bulked up that much, though I haven't seen him to be fair. He has always been a fairly big fella

Here are my thoughts from being at the game on Wednesday;

Rory Scholes and Darren Leader look like they are separated at birth. Or they at least go to the same stylist.
James Cannon stole a lovely line-out and the line-out was solid when he was on the pitch. But in open play he wasn't very effective to be honest. He missed a tackle in the first half for a Wasp break. He just looks like a man who is carrying a ruck sack full of cement when he runs with the ball or when he tries to get into position for a defensive tackle. But then again to be fair he is a very big man.
Great to see Eoghan Masterson on the pitch. I thought he did very well and he looked fit. He'll be important this year I feel.
Eoin McKeon looks like he has bulked up a lot. Maybe it just appeared that way from where I was sitting, I'd be Interested to hear other people's opinion on that. It could just be me.
Gavin Thornbury looked very light, but there's loads of potential there. Great signing I reckon. Being in a real professional environment will bring him on.
James Mitchell is a lot smaller then I thought he was. He through some great flat passes in the first half. Very quick to the ruck as well.
Really impressed by Jarrad Butler. He was looking for the ball all the time. That said, he was on a different level match fitness wise to everyone else.

Look ... Some really good Rugby was played by Connacht in that game.

The one real concern I would have, Is that Connacht couldn't deal with any kind of physical pressure in the game. Either in the scrum or maul (in both halves). I mean it was glaring and shocking. Wasps didn't even look like they were breaking a sweat. I know there are a lot of players to come in. But it's still a worry and it just doesn't sit right. Something to work on I guess.

KK:

“We will hopefully learn a lot from that match as well,” said Keane, whose side led by 22-12 after 65 minutes against Wasps, but with 29 players being used Connacht’s youthful 15 were caught in the final quarter.

“It was a really good workout against Wasps, we gave all the guys a run and we learned a lot from it. I was pleased with the first-half, the first team performed very well.

“We had the young babies on in the second-half, a couple of people got found out on a few issues but they will learn from that, they will grow from that and that was the idea of playing everybody.

“I enjoyed the atmosphere, a pre-season game, seven and a half thousand people at it in a magnificent facility, it was a really worthwhile exercise for us.
“It’s been a bit of a muddled week with the two fixtures but I think we learned a lot from the game against Wasps and moving forward to Bristol, we will learn a bit more there,” added Keane, whose side will open their Pro14 campaign at home to Glasgow Warriors when he will be pitted against his former Chiefs boss Dave Rennie.

New Coaching Team and after our first pre-season friendly all of the younger players are going really worried about improving their defensive performance. They now have to convince the coaches that they can be relied on to front up in defence. Sounds like a good outcome to me!

I was at the game last night and for the first hour or so it was a very good game, with a lot to be happy about from a Connacht standpoint. Leader and Scholes both impressed the Wasps fans around me, the defence was good as was the passing accuracy and the line out. Funnily enough it seemed to turn when they had a man binned, that provoked a reaction and it was Wasps men against our boys for the last 20 or so and they could pretty well score at will. Overall I left the ground more optimistic about the season ahead than when I went on.

In general I'm pleased by the showing of the first 65 mins, just the fact that with guys like McKeon, O'Brien and others we conceded heavily towards the end. Given the injuries we've suffered over the past number of seasons it's a little disappointing that we didn't hold in slightly better as some of those academy lads may be needed at times in the games that actually do matter, I understand it's the first outing of the season and the first outing in a long time for guys like O'Donnell and a lot of young guns were coming on. I think Connachta articulated what I was trying to say with a a better tone, but ultimately last season many myself included wrote off the first competitive game for a number of valid reasons and yet it was indicative of many issues that were to persist for the season that followed. I'm very much hoping that there is no need to be worried, but if, and hopefully when, we are down a number of guys in November and February/March will we be able to stick with teams that have greater numbers, just a general feeling not trying to be overly pessimistic sorry if it's coming off that way.

I think we can be worried to conceed 4 tries within 17 minutes, even with Academy boys, AND in the same time surprised and very pleased to have lead a fitter Wasps team away from home during 64 minutes without 4/5 of our international players

Wonder what will be the reaction when we lose a game that actually matters

The point is always the same : add Dillane, Roux, Buckley Aki TOH Marmion and you don't need any Acedemy boys
We clearly have a senior team who can compete with the best in Europe. But as a consequence, international call-ups happen and we don't have the depth

As usual the point will be avoiding injuries (if Ronaldson is injured, troubles come as soon as now)
And hoping 2 or 3 young guys will step up in position where we're short in, i.e LH, 2nd row, centre

Mate it hasn't been overplayed, most of the guys who came on only have a handful of appearances and it was KK first game in charge. When Wasps brought players on they made impacts like Basset for Miller for example. Understandable as KK is trying to find his best side as this is his first real game as the Munster match was a moc game, Dai is in a much better position as he has had this team for years and already has a recognised spine to the team and was probably figuring out who goes where (e.g. No Daly for awhile so who fills in at 13). The fact in his first game in charge Connacht were able to match a side like Wasps for as long as we did is impressive, must admit I wasn't aware of all the changes at HT and was concerned at the late collapse until I heard about the changes. Almost worth mentioning it's Wasps second game of the pre season so are more match fit than our guys. Next game vs Bristol will answer more questions and I do hope the changes at half time aren't made as it can't help the confidence to give away that many tries so late, that's something Keane needs to build on.

While I agree that we can't overreact to the result of one half of a preseason friendly, I'm still disappointed at the scoreline and the manner of the capitulation at the end. I think we are overplaying the inexperience of the second half side, there are a few experienced heads in there, mixed in with guys that we are going to need to count on towards the end of games and when the chips are down in terms of injuries and potentially Irish callups too. How they finished the game probably highlights that we still don't have that strength in depth that hurt us last season, there's potential for growth but I think we right this off at our own peril. I'm sure that KK will have learned a lot about a number of players from this experience. While it's still too early to tell I'm optimistic and still disappointed by what I've heard from the game, ultimately preseason games mean nothing in the long term but if they are a sign of what's to come they become far more pertinent, let's hope that we can rectify these issues for Saturday, and in particular Saturday week.

I was at the game with a friend. The handling was much improved on last year, the new faces impressed (Butler, Scholes, and Mitchell look like smart additions), Carty was on song with his clever kicking, and generally the first-half team left me feeling optimistic.

The second half, especially the final quarter, was a shocker but I wouldn't be too disheartened. Wasps had a strong team out for much of the game and their big players delivered when they needed it. The Connacht team that finished were inexperienced.

All in all I'm happy. A win against Bristol would be ideal preparation before the Glasgow game.

Holy moley lads. This was a preseason friendly. No one should care about the result.
Friendlies are all about practice. Working on moves.
Trying new ideas. Some ideas will work, some wont. If they dont work, and cost us 40 points, so what. As long as we learn from it before the season starts.

On a side, a friend of mine was at the game with his green tinted glasses.
He was keeping me in the loop during the game, but he basically said that we played some really good stuff in the first half. He was most impressed with our hands, which is great to hear. Lets hope that they keep improving during pre-season

@ConnachtCows - Always looking for new followers :)
