Why not?

This isn't Thomond where we have to rely on an invented tradition to make us stand out...

can you tell another way a tradition becomes a tradition if someone or some people dont come up with or, to use your word, invent an idea that others agree with and repeat over a significant period of time?

There is nothing conceited about showing respect for kickers whoever they play for. my memory of contepomi at thomond is the crowd cheering him everytime he missed a kick as opposed to jeering him before and during the kick.

However if you want to copy the french and create a venue thats renowned for disrespecting kickers and the opposition then knock yourself out. you can invent your own tradition!

that is if you can get the majority of patrons to follow suit.

Was wondering how long it would take for the man who defends all things Munster and calls himself Rossie to chime in.

Not long...

Thats not my memory of it and i attended most of the games between the two teams that he played in.
Sledging to use the common term goes on in all sports and contepomi gave it every bit as much as he recieved it by all accounts. He couldnt take it though and he had a habit of bottling it in these games. He did become a bit of a running joke as the games went on and he was expected to bottle it everytime he played us. he generally did much to our amusement and got the slagging that a bottler generally gets when they duelly bottle it. towards the end of his time there was an element of whoooooo! when he stepped up to kick followed by laughter and applause when he missed but i never witnessed wholesale jeering or booing.

Eh no Rossie, with respect No...

The players set the tone for the supporters every time Contepomi played in Munster, he was no angel but there was some bad stuff aimed at him on the pitch and from the Terrace before, during and after kicks...

its a tradition of course but its a bad tradition in my opinion in that its a tradition borne out of a desire to disrespect the opposition

Perhaps not, but it's the only place where it's bigged up to much more than it is.

Not in France though !

Its not really a rugby thing more of an accepted Celtic/English thing

Agree with you WP_rathead. Respect for the kicker has always been part of rugby no matter how your team is doing.

Shame I wasn't there, I could have given him some Sea_point style lovin' to soften his cough....

There are some Connacht supporters who still cannot understand that in the professional era to be competitive we have to recruit players from a variety of locations where a local option is not to the right calibre. They struggle to show respect for these players or even give them the support or benefit of the doubt anywhere near the levels they give to indigenous players of lower ability or performance level...

For my tuppence-worth, you support every player that pulls on the Connacht jersey, that doesn't mean that they are above criticism if the don't put in an honest shift but the starting point of every weekend is on of respect and support for every squad member who enters the fray on our behalf...

I know the fella you're talking about S4P. One of those people who is just seems very bitter about life in general, and takes it out on the people around him. Best to try and ignore these people if you can, and letting them get to you just fuels their fire.

Well said that man.

I think I remember the loud mouthed (old term for child with unmarried parents). You are not the only one who nearly chinned him.

Only reason he did not say anything to the Ulster boys is because they would have.

Love the comment about his mother
