Connacht team to face Brive

15th January 2016

Pat Lam has named his Connacht side to face Brive in round 5 of the European Challenge Cup on Saturday. The head coach has made 10 changes to the starting team that travelled to face Scarlets five days ago.

USA international outhalf AJ MacGinty has been handed his third start of the season while Ian Porter comes in at scrum half.

Bundee Aki moves to inside centre to allow Academy centre Rory Parata wear the number 13 shirt. Danie Poolman returns to start on the right wing while Tiernan O’Halloran and last week’s try scorer Matt Healy are retained to complete the back three.

Up front, Ronan Loughney, Jason Harris-Wright and Rodney Ah You start in a new front row while Aly Muldowney partners Ultan Dillane in the second row this week.

Academy flankers Sean O’Brien and James Connolly are named in the back row while captain John Muldoon shifts to Number 8.

Denis Buckley makes a welcome return from injury to take his place on the replacements bench that also sees George Naoupu, Caolin Blade and Peter Robb included this week. Jack Carty is in line to mark his 50th appearance for Connacht should he come on at Stade Amedee-Damenech tomorrow night.
Commenting on the team selection and the upcoming game, Pat Lam said:

“Tomorrow’s game against Brive is a massive one for us in terms of our European ambitions. Securing a home quarter final is a goal we set out at the start of the season. Brive are flying in the Top 14 and have only been beaten once at home this season so we know it’s going to be another tough assignment on the road. But playing in France is always a challenge the boys enjoy and we’re really looking forward to it.

“We’ve made a few changes to the side with the short enough turnaround from last week’s trip to Wales. With guys coming back from injury, competition for places is very high and this is a great opportunity for those lining out tomorrow to put in a performance for the team.”

No update from the branch yet but the team is up on the EPCR website:

Marmion and White didn't travel, couple starters on the bench, otherwise pretty full bore.

Brive v Connacht match preview

Holder at the last two European Challenge matches against the Russians, Thomas Acquier will rethread the blue heater, this weekend against Connacht. With serious ambitions.

If for some the European Challenge Cup is a competition which is of little interest, Thomas Acquier is 100 leagues to share this idea. And hooker would welcome it as fun to play this competition is extended a little. "The Challenge Cup format is great because it allows everyone to be involved and concerned. It must be our sixteenth consecutive week with matches and we know that a player can not play all the matches. "

It was in the wake of a European encounter against Galway already Brive went clinch the first win of its history on the lawn Oyonnax. A sequence that owed nothing to chance. "This competition allows us to play different teams, with other arbitrations. This is a different approach, so it also serves us for the Top 14. And then it's a raised competition. "

It is used for the Top 14, but it is also sufficient to itself, especially with the prospect of going beyond the group stage. "Our goal is to get out of this hen. It has never hidden and even after misstep in Russia, we still do not hide it. We need to win both matches to come. The accounts are simple to make. With two wins, we catch our blunder in Russia and we offer a quarterfinal. It is not given to everyone. And that we receive and that we play at home, it will be great. I know the guy who had played against Bath, there are two years, keep a great memory, even if the score had been heavy. "
"I'm curious to see what the Russians
will do "

Acquier Briviste was not, at the time, and hooker intends to forge similar memories. And, thereby, to discover something he does not know. "Every weekend in the Top 14, it was the challenge matches. It was at loggerheads but matches of the finals, it must have a different flavor and I want to taste it. I've never experienced that, except in the Federal 1 and if the European Cup will allow me, that would be great. Already, the match against Connacht is a little sixteenth-finals and if we win it, you will play eighth against Newcastle. "

Cleavers matches that have their importance in the Russian setback in the field of Sochi. "This is a game we took lightly. They had a good level. This is what makes the strength of this sport, all opponents can beat anyone. I await with interest to see what the Russians will do on the last two matches. They surprised us and I think they can surprise the other. I hope they will make a good match and clinch their second win. "Enisei But it will be the Newcastle menu, not from Brive, which will therefore return to Connacht on Saturday. Presumably Irish in all conditions.

"It will look a lot like the match that there were there, prophesying Acquier. The land will be bold, it will certainly play up front, on the conquest, the worn balls and scrimmage. It will be expected of it by the Irish. "One point is not to displease the old Carcassonne which has also passed the test line in Galway, as it did in Sochi. Whenever on worn out.

Will it be on in the Dail? I'll be in town and would be a shame to miss it...

Alas no, they can't get it unfortunately, but if anyone knows a place that can and will show it, spread the word.

Assuming that team is correct there are only 5 players that could be considered first teamers, as well as a few more who would make the first 23. However these include their captain, No. 8 (and chief source of go-forward) and scrum-half, so all in all still a fairly strong team.

Numbers in brackets indicates Top 14 starts this season -

BUYS(3) ACQUIER(3) LAVERGNE(0)

LEBAS(1) MÊLA(7)

WEYTTON(0) KOYA(9) SANCONIE(3)

UGALDE(7) PEJOINE(4)

NAMY(6) LARANJEIRA(3) TUATARA(4) MIGNARDI(10)

SOLA(1)

Oh that doesn't even make the Top 10 on the list of Things That Are Confusing Pinky. But, yes, Eurosport seem to have numbered the replacements all over the shop - Steenkamp in the backs, etc.

Same front row and half back pairing that started at the Sportsground in November as well as Whetton in the backrow and Tuatara and Sola in the backs. It think what is confusing Pinky is the replacement list from the Montpellier game that S_P put up is not in the ordered we'd expect.

I guess Pat feels the Enisei game will provide a rest for everyone that needs it if he plans to go with his strongest 23 here. Not how I would go about it, but I don't really feel the reward of the Challenge Cup is worth the risk. Though a win in France will probably boost morale more than just a home win against the Russians a week later and two good wins before facing the Scarlets again has the team gaining momentum for the 2nd half of the season.

It's a strong side. There seems to be a be a few of them, i.e. Sola, Ugalde, out of position in the backs but no hooker in there..

So that is fairly second-string at best, right?
Is that a hooker in the threequarter line or am I reading it backwards?
