Mike Ruddock’s replacement as Ireland under-20s coach by Connacht academy manager Nigel Carolan shows a new approach to underage structures, more aligned with the provinces.
This is just the start of a root and branch assessment . A lean towards skills development rather than “competition heavy” attitude, particularly evident in rugby schools, requires the rattling of archaic cages.
“I’m not trying to change anyone’s mindset just yet,” he said. “What I am trying to do is make sure that we look at every single competition, and what structures are in place, and then make a judgement on whether they are right or not.”
Seems they wanted a more skills orientated coach which Carolan is to a tee. I think it's a good move, Ruddock did a good job but 5 years is enough especially for a coach who is coming towards the end of his career not starting it.

I honestly don't know why Ruddock left but as GTTC mentioned about Carolan getting poached that this could be a sizable bone to keep him in the country. Carolan has done fantastic work for us so having him in charge of the nations U20's could be part of an overall structure being put in place by Nucifora and Co.

Just from a purely connacht view though, cannot see him staying here much longer. Will be poached.

Was Ruddock pushed or did he leave? Not sure that being coach of Lansdowne was the height of his ambitions.

I think it will also put him in a strong position to attract more talent to Connacht as having the Connacht coach being the Ireland U20's Manager is a strong incentive to try and catch his eye for International level recognition.
