I'm going to find my pre-match buy-one-get-one-free voucher for that game and destroy it while I have the chance.

I found this piece pretty interesting. Its surprising to me that Ford found the introduction of wrestling and functional fitness techniques unusual as I would have assumed they were commonplace.
Afaik NZ brought wrestling coaching and techniques into their training before the last world cup I believe. Its possibly the most anaerobically demanding sport and also pretty closely mimics the demands of scrummaging, rucking and tackling (in fact exceeds those demands in some ways, which is good).
Similarly functional fitness training is so well established in strength and fitness to be a cliche at this stage, but it sounds like it was the first time this was attempted by either Edinburgh, and possibly Scotland. Its not a magic bullet but its a good way of improving aerobic and anaerobic fitness while moving weight, which again should benefit rugby players.
It'll be interesting to see if this has a notable effect on Edinburgh, they are one of Connacht's first opponents so should be rearing to go.
It also raises questions about the development of Connacht's training, they obviously signed a proper s&c coach (first time ever?) and I've seen some clips of wrestling-tackle hybrid training and a recent video of rehab where guys passed multiple balls while asking questions and stuff to mimic the intensity of a game.

All the games last year were in the Sportsground. It being that there are no home senior games between Bayonne the previous week and Munster on Jan. 1, it should be possible to get a good crowd put for this game if the branch market it right.

Leader vs Byrne for long-kicking game and Heenan vs Powell at the base of the scrum/ruck will be great Head-to-head!
I was at this game yesterday, as I now live in Bristol. I've always fancied NGD at home as a nailed on 4 point win for Connacht - with a bonus point always an option. However, I was unpleasantly surprised how good the Dragons were! - particularly as they made 10 substitutions and still won both halves.
By the way, there's a good few Bristol fans already booked for accommodation in Galway for the weekend of Connacht Eagles match in December. As the Connacht first team are in Bayonne that weekend it would be a real shame if the Eagles fixture was shipped off down to Athlone.

NEWPORT Gwent Dragons enjoyed victory in their first hit-out of 2014/15 after running four tries past Bristol in a 34-19 success at Clifton.
In perfect weather on a cracking surface it was an extremely useful workout for Lyn Jones' men in the countdown to their Guinness Pro12 opener against Connacht in Galway.
The Dragons made the short trip over the border with a massive squad and 35 players benefitted from getting some game time.
Results don't matter in pre-season but victory is certainly preferable to defeat and the Rodney Parade region will see more positives than negatives when they dissect their performance at their Ystrad Mynach training base.
Bristol, who are preparing for a mouth-watering Championship opener against fellow promotion hopefuls Worcester, had some pretty formidable players in the grandstand with Nicky Robinson, Ian Evans, Ryan Jones and Anthony Perenise all among the punters.
And those that took to the field were certainly no mugs; they got stuck into the Dragons with an aggressive defence, although they appeared to share their boss Andy Robinson's lack of regard for the offside line.
It was pretty bruising from the first whistle with centre Jack Dixon clattered when going up for the kick-off and number eight Andy Powell left to nurse a sore knee after a typically uncompromising carry.
The Dragons were sharper out of the blocks and eased into a 10-0 lead after eight minutes with fly-half Jason Tovey booting an early penalty and then converting his own try after gliding over from 10 metres.
As is to be expected of a first hit-out, the game was slightly frantic at times with play littered with little inaccuracies and miscommunication.
It was all about getting a first taste of proper contact, although Tovey probably didn't expect to be on the receiving end of a Lee Byrne, the fly-half paying the price of not being on his new skipper's wavelength.
Bristol had a quartet of good chances – captain Dwayne Peel knocking on when clear 25 metres out, former Cardiff Met student Mark Cooke dropping the ball thanks to Aled Brew's tackle on the line, flanker Marco Mama smashed inches short and wing Ryan Edwards bundled into touch in the corner – but the Dragons held firm.
Referee Simon Harding was pinging the visitors for plenty of offences and the hosts were on the scoreboard just past the half hour when he marched under the sticks after deeming a driving maul had been stopped illegally just shy of the line.
Veteran fly-half Adrian Jarvis added the extras but the Dragons regained their 10-point advantage before the break when, after a strong charge by Powell and a snipe by scrum-half Jonathan Evans, South African lock Rynard Landman reached over the whitewash.
And they headed into their changing room with a 20-7 lead courtesy of another Tovey penalty with the last kick, although the three points came after fly-half butchered a chance that would have seen him on the receiving end of a Jones rollocking in a Pro12 game.
The Dragons made 13 changes for the second half – centres Jack Dixon and Pat Leach the sole survivors – but the new pack still had no answer to the driving lineout.
Irish prop Jack O'Connell was the man to profit from a terrific heave by the Bristol pack but the visitors responded with a super, length-of-the-field score.
Dorian Jones appeared to be pinned back close to his own line but reaped the rewards from having an intent to play with lock Cory Hill finishing the swift counter-attack strongly in the corner from Leach's pass after he had won the race to midfield partner Dixon's chip.
Rhys Jones converted but the hosts responded swiftly against a worryingly leaky defence, centre Luke Eves powering over from a set move off a scrum to make it 27-19 approaching the hour.
There were a few nervy moments but the victory was assured when a super pass by replacement fly-half Angus O'Brien allowed loosehead Owen Evans to gallop over under the sticks.
Bristol: D Hudson, R Edwards, L Eves, M Cooke, C Amesbury, A Jarvis, D Peel (captain), J O'Connell, M Crumpton, J Hall, B Glynn, G Townson, M Mama, R Rennie, B Skirving. Replacements: R Lawrence, B Leung, E Genge, J Joyce, O Robinson, C Hampson, L Baldwin, C Sheedy, L Slowik, J Wallace.
Scorers: tries – penalty, J O'Connell, L Eves; conversions – A Jarvis (2)
Dragons first half: L Byrne (captain), A Hewitt, P Leach, J Dixon, A Brew, J Tovey, J Evans, B Stankovich, E Dee, L Fairbrother, M Screech, R Landman, A Coombs, N Cudd, A Powell.
Dragons second half: R Jones, T Prydie, P Leach (B Nightingale 56), J Dixon (A O'Brien 56), M Pewtner, D Jones, R Rees (C Edwards 73), O Evans (L Garrett 78), R Thomas (R Buckley 72), D Way (D Young 75), I Gough (S Andrews 74), C Hill, J Thomas, L Evans, S Matthews.
Scorers: tries – J Tovey, R Landman, C Hill, O Evans; conversions – J Tovey (2), R Jones (2); penalties – J Tovey (2)
Referee: Simon Harding (RFU)
Leader vs Byrne for long-kicking game and Heenan vs Powell at the base of the scrum/ruck will be great Head-to-head!

If people want to get down from somewhere like Dublin, its a stretch and you'd need to knock off at 4 or 4.30 to have any real comfort but something like 8pm would make it tough for families. A lot of things to be taken into account but for the moment I think its the right decision and it can be re-evaluated in due course.
Can't understand though with the first game not being on TV why they didn't fix it for 7.35 on Friday to get people used to going to games on Friday again?
Either way, with the Challenge Cup games to be pencilled in on Thursday we'll be able to have concrete dates to look forward to.

Pro are the atmosphere will go up. there's something about rugby under lights that is special.
con- it's damn awkward for anyone more than an hour from Galway. Dublin based guys won't make it
also only a small thing but Leinster game is a direct clash with a Galway FC game. Anyone in the small grouping who might have to, would choose Connacht but always felt in a town of this size best to avoid clashes between the town's teams

All other home games are televised, so that is probably a factor.
So mixed news for people who have to travel long distances as the kick off time is awkward but they can watch without travelling. Good news for Galway based fans as the kick off times are better from an atmosphere point of view.
Only two away games not televised and Treviso could happen yet as it's not confirmed.

Rounds 1-13.
Connacht's first game is 5pm Saturday against Dragons, after that the next 6 home league games are nighttime ones (4 Friday, 1 Saturday, 1 Thursday Jan. 1).
At least 9 games live on TV, possibly more as 2 away fixtures have yet to be set.
That's a bit of a result.

Fixtures list out. Initially good, a home game against Dragons and away to Edinburgh, both doable. Then Leinster at home, exciting. Glasgow away, rough. But then Blues and Treviso, manageable. Ospreys(a), then Zebre(h), then Scarlets(h), ok. But then three back to back provincials at Christmas? That's going to be tough.

Lets all bow to TG4 once again. RTE (useless crap) have jumped ship on the pro12.
out of 12 rounds up to xmas, we'll be on TV 5.
ok 2 are vs leinster and 2 others are home games. sadly only 1 away game.
Good news for our non season ticket friends
***edit to add. take note, dates are a friday, prob to lazy to put in all 3 dates for that weekend. i cant imagine munster v leinster being on a friday?
i do hope that all games above are a friday though, imagine 4 good buzy on a friday night. god do i miss that.
As these fixtures are on the TG4 website you can take it they are all Friday nights. The Munster v Leinster game is on a Friday - St.Steven's Day - so that might be an afternoon fixture. When SKY & BBC Wales & BBC NI & S4C release their fixtures we'd be hard put NOT to be on the TV every second week.
