Just to add to the praise and regret, he's been a true servant for Connacht rugby and will be sorely missed. Hoping that he has a bright future in whatever he puts his sizeable hands to. Meas mór, Brett.

Very sad for Brett. I don't give Bradley credit for much but he picked up a good player when he brought him here and he's been an ever present almost ever since. He's been there through many bad days but he's served Connacht with distinction. I saw him here for a few more years yet but it wasn't to be.

It'll be a major shock for him as rugby is the only career he has known but as others have said he has to think of his health and his long term future. Hope he can move on to the next stage of his life and enjoy good health and success and hopefully we'll see him back in the Sportsground on occasion. He'll always be well regarded in Connacht.

Absolutely sickened by this news and for Brett. He must be devastated.

Was one of my favourite players, and an absolute gentleman any time (once) I spoke to him outside of the Sportsground.

Glad I will be over for the Cardiff game to say Goodbye.

Has been a rock for our team and I wish him all the best in his future. If Lam's and McFarland's references are anything to go on I am sure he will enjoy success whatever it is he turns his hand to.

A Massive shame and I'm going to be the first to say he has to be a shoe in for the Clan Hall of Fame at the end of the year. A great guy who will leave a big hole in the squad. Always terrible when this happens.

Quality player, was having a super season. Really sad that he has to retire from what seemed fairly innocuous at the time.

League - 119 starts and 15 sub appearances.

Europe - 43 starts and 3 as sub.

In total he appeared in 183 of the 206 capped games (180 of 202 competitive games) Connacht played between his arrival and his final game against Saracens.

His total caps also includes 3 of the 4 games versus international teams in this period (South Africa 2007, Portugal 2008, Ireland 2011; he did not feature against Samoa in November 2010, presumably because he was involved with the Ireland squad).

First choice from start to finish.

Absolutely gutted to hear the news, I was the same as S4P didn't think it was that bad. What a player he has being for us and rugby in general.

Awfully sad news, but as others have said, his health had to come first. Brett has been solid as a rock for Connacht, and his loss will be felt hugely. I was happy to read that he intends to stay in Ireland, and who knows, he may end up involved behind the scenes for Connacht in the future. I wish him all the best, and I too would love to see him given a chance to walk out in front of the Clan, so we can show our appreciation for the committment he has shown over the years. Thanks Brett.

Aye, was a shock seeing that tweet pop up this morning. Brett has put heart and soul into Connacht rugby. It's never nice to see a player have to announce his retirement, but his health has to come first.

Gutted. Can't believe it. I know someone said he might have to retire due to his injury few weeks ago but I thought it wasn't that serious. One of the best players before getting infused
Ya Brett has an irish passport so probably staying around

Tough, tough game. Kyle and now Brett.

Wish him nothing but the best and look forward to cheering when he does come out with the team at the last game.

Absolutely gutted for him an absolute gentleman on the few occasions I've met him and a great role model to my young fella. I can only wish the best of luck in the future but if he gives whatever he does half the effort he put into his Connacht appearances he'll do alright. :(
