Are the accounts made public at any stage? I know someone mentioned overseas clinical costs, but it has to be more than that. Munster and Leinster have posted losses in recent years to this effect, but they're powerhouses in comparison to us - someone has gambled and lost on this; I hope they're putting into place plans to start addressing it properly.

Any opinions on what might happen because of this??
Someone is surely in hot water
No wonder the supporters gift was so sh*t and they've added booking fees onto their tickets

THERE is growing concern over a serious budget over run in Connacht, estimated at more than €400,000, sources in the province and the IRFU have told the Sunday Independent.

A senior union source said that there was no threat to the running of the game in the west, but that it has serious implications for the Professional Game Board in the province.

"It's the worst thing that could have happened," he said.

The PGB was set up in December 2010 with a responsibility, according to the official statement at the time: "to oversee all aspects of the professional game in Connacht."

Its creation was heralded at the time as a key step in making Connacht a more viable entity on and off the field.

Spokespersons for the IRFU, Connacht and the PGB were all unavailable for comment yesterday.

as far as i know the majority of the proceeds from the Heineken Cup and Amlin go into the IRFU coffers.

well last year they had budgeted for no Hcup. Maybe they've figured that they could go over after getting into it. Moved the goal posts so to speak

Worrying news here!!!

Indeed. Not a threat to the game, but how on earth did they manage that kind of serious over-spend? Put the €3 charge into a new light.

Apparently there was significant chunk from unforeseen overseas medical bills last season (specialist sports clinics and surgery in UK/Germany). The 50K committed by NUIG this week will help but I'm not sure over what how many years this will be paid.

Well, if you we're Philip Browne and you found a €400K+ hole where there shouldn't have been one, what would you do???

When I arrived at the game yesterday one of the lads at the gate and a journo were speculating as to whether tom had left the building. Makes more sense now. As does the lack of a defence coach. One might also note that both Leinster and Munster have posted losses of the order of 300k plus in recent years and the response from Independent Towers has been a disinterested shrug.
