A previous agreement to sell it in 2007 for about €25 million fell through when the club failed to secure planning permission for a suitable alternative venue.

Yep, elements in the council killed what would have been a brilliant deal for Wegians (and for Corinthians too for that matter, ceding them the eastern half of the city, Mervue, Renmore, Oranmore, Claregalway etc..)...

Wegians need this deal, the site has too many limitations and restrictions to meet the needs of their adult and especially underage sections.
The smaller monetary amount is largely irrelevant, development costs are still nowhere near that of the Celtic tiger period so they should still be able to build a facility that can compete with Corinthians and other sports clubs in the city. Schools like the Jes/Bish will look to utilise the facility too as they have no playing fields of their own currently I believe....
I would be very surprised if they don't already have a couple of parcels of land banked out near the proposed Ring Road and near to a transport corridor back into the city....

Word around the club is that this deal has been done for a while. The Bish definitely don't have pitches, when I was there we had to walk to Newcastle for training which usually meant we had about half an hour to actually train.

Neither Bish or Jes have pitches.
They train in the swamp down in the claddagh and play games either there or in Newcastle(which is Boys Clubs unofficial second pitch afaik)

If Wegians move west of city it could affect NUIGs underage set up which was set up specifically as west of city had no underage rugby for kids to play..

Will be great if they get a new set up with more than 2 pitches, better dressing rooms etc

I went to the Bun Scoil in the late 70's and Jes trained and played in the Swamp (South Park) even back then. Well nicknamed, regularly blown out of it while running on treacle....

Would be a major benefit to both schools. Wouldnt be surprised if Wegians plan to incorporate a 4g pitch too. Make a lot of sense for Minis/Schools use....

Buccaneers beat UCD at the weekend to record their first win of the season, still bottom of 1A but the gap is a bit closer now. Team featured current players Luke Carty, Conor McKeon, Claffey, Boyle. and O'Donnell as well as Shane Layden and Cian Romaine.

Galwegians and Corinthians both lost badly and sit second and third bottom of 2A respectively. Galwegians looking to avoid a third successive relegation.

Sligo lost away to Seapoint but remain at the top of 2C.

Buccaneers came back from 10-0 down to beat St Mary's 11-10. Still bottom of 1A but a lot closer to the teams ahead now.

Corinthians lost narrowly away to top of the table Malone but the LBP brings them up to 7th in 2A. Galwegians blew a 13-0 lead and ended up going down 18-40 to Highfield at home. Bottom of the pile now.

Sligo won again and are now 5 points clear at the top of 2C.

Buccs lost their bottom of the table clash at home to Mary's 6-22, 5 points adrift heading into the winter break.

Corinthians lost 17-31 at home to table topping Malone, stay 2nd from bottom in 2A. Galwegians' nightmare continues as they went down 35-10 at Highfield, still bottom.

Sligo stay 3 points clear at the top of 2C following a 20-20 draw at Bangor.

Anyone know what academy players to watch out for at the Corinthians - Wegians match tonight?

Maybe Burke, Masterson, Kerins, Joyce, and de Buitlear for Corinthians and Kyne and Gaffney for Wegians? Is Fox playing AIL?

His brother, Rory. Highly rated, been involved with Ireland u20 training camps this year. Recently switched from 10 to 9 and has been starting there consistently for Wegians.

Typically project players & NIEs aren't assigned a club, though there are a few exceptions where someone's been playing in Ireland for years (Isa Nacewa is assigned to Old Belvedere for instance). Don't know if that applies to academy project projects though, or even if there *are* any other academy project players.

I believe he's the first NIE academy player so there's no real precedent.

Good wins this weekend for Sligo and 'Wegians, but looks like relegation now Corinthians, and Buccs' are gone down to 1B, also brilliant win for Ballina in the round robin, it would be great to get another Connacht club up into senior club rugby, so hopefully they can do the business over the next couple of weekends.

Well bit late but great win for Sligo moving up to 2B, Corintinans and Buccs down with just Galwegians staying put for next season. Another big win last weekend for Ballina, and now almost are hot favourites to emerge from the round robin for the play-off to move into 2C next season, which would be as far as I know, would be away against Bective Rangers
